Rajdhani Express trains were introduced in the year 1969 for providing high-speed connections up to 140 kilometers speed from New Delhi to the various state capital cities of India. The speed varies depending upon the particular track section. This class of train has very limited stoppages along its journey. This station was developed as an alternative railway station as part of measures to decongest Patna Junction Railway Station. Built at a cost of Rs 8.61 crore, has all modern facilities for the passengers. Its main entrance faces the College of Commerce, Patna.

In order to provide station and property development over and around the station the first phase is planned to be operational by the time of Delhi Commonwealth Games in 2010. This redevelopment is expected to cost 6000 Crores.
