Number of states in India
The states in India are mostly created on linguistic differences. Since independence number of states in India has changed a lot.
In the year 2000, three new states were established in India namely Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Uttaranchal. Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh were created from parts of Bihar and Orissa while Uttaranchal was created from north Uttar Pradesh.
This was the last change in the number of states in India till date. The total count of number of states in India stands at 29 including NCR Delhi which is also accorded the status of a state. India also has 6 union territories.
In the states, the Governor, as the representative of the President of India, is the head fo the government executive. The Union Territories are administered directly by the President through an Administrator appointed by him/her. There is no elected government in the union territories. Each State and UT of India has a unique culture, demography, food habits, dress, festivals and also language in some of the cases
